OK first thing is first, goto your settings and tweak the key bindings to your liking, change your name, grab a spray and change your crosshairs.
Next, make sure you got it all right by playing a quick game with bots. To do this from the main menu start a game, on the first tab pick a map and check the "Include bots in game" box and put in 9 bots, goto the next tab, make the changes you want to there, it's all preference. Last tab make sure bots can use all weapons and start the game to test your settings.

Ok first thing you want to do in game is memorize all hot keys for buying shit you need. like instead of clicking Equpiment then clicking Kevlar + Helmet, just gte it in your head to press "B -> 6 -> 2" to go into buy screen then 6 for equpiment then 2 to buy kevlar + helmet. And contine to do this for all other equpiment you buy. QUICK NOTE, in CS 1.6 the hot keys are a little different so for armor + hel in cs 1.6 is "B -> 8 -> 2

Now that you've learned to buy you gear you need to know the most important thing: "Gear doesn't make the player, the player makes the gear" this just means there is no weapon that is better than another it's all about the players individual skill. I've killed snipers with the Artic Magnum with a glock 18 before. TIP! Try to be proficient with every weapon and set up, it'll make you a better player.

Now you need to know the maps like you know your house. The better you know the map the more likely you are to win. Just play the maps and watch what others do.
